Lamar Odom |
It's been over five weeks since Lamar Odom was hospitalized following a near-fatal overdose, but sadly, the former athlete is far from recovered.
"Lamar has made some progress, but his cognitive impairment is making life very challenging," says an insider, who notes that Odom, 36, is not able to walk by himself and struggles to communicate verbally, issues attributable to oxygen deprivation and the strokes he suffered following his overdose.
A source close to Khloé Kardashian, who has been a near constant presence at her estranged husband's side, says Odom will likely need significant help completing everyday tasks for the foreseeable future.
"Lamar won't likely leave the hospital for a long time," says the source. "And when he does, he will need full time care. He can't take care of himself."
Still, the insider says the former Los Angeles Laker is "a fighter who works hard every day" and is grateful for Kardashian's support. Says the insider: "With Khloé in his life, Lamar is very lucky. She has been amazing."
But the sad fact remains that the former basketball champion, once a powerhouse on the court, is facing an uncertain – and likely very challenging – future.
Says the source: "Lamar has serious longterm and lasting issues. His life will never be the same as it once was."
